The Australian Open has a deep-rooted connection to Melbourne, dating back to the first Australasian Lawn Tennis Championships held at the Warehouseman’s Cricket Ground on St Kilda Road. Melbourne, the sporting capital of Australia, became the tournament’s permanent host in 1972 at the esteemed Kooyong Lawn Tennis Club. As the event’s popularity and prestige soared, the state government responded by constructing the world-class National Tennis Centre at Flinders Park, catering to the growing global fanbase. This remarkable journey epitomises Melbourne’s dedication to providing an exceptional tennis experience, solidifying its status as a premier destination for the Australian Open.
